The Gift of Growth

A few weeks ago, a good friend and I spent the day in Tijuana, Mexico visiting families and friends we know there. We have been involved in supporting a community in Tijuana for a few years now, and from time to time we get to go and visit. They are beautiful people.

One thing that never ceases to amaze and sadden me is their inability to consider the hope of a good future. Most of the families we support down there are just trying to make it through the day. It is a very sad reality. A reality that is more pervasive in this world than most of us care to acknowledge.

When I leave that place, I go through a whole host of emotions, one of which is gratitude. Another is responsibility.

It is quite likely that, if you are reading this blog, you are blessed in so many ways. More than you can count. One way that we are blessed is that we have both the freedom and possibility to dream and plan for a future.

We can look ahead into the coming year and make plans, create goals, and believe that there is indeed prosperity and peace in store for us. Having a vision for where we want to go is a luxury that so many in this world don’t even know they could have. As you make your plans for next year, do not take this for granted.

Do you have a personal development plan? Do you have a health plan? Do you have a reading plan? Do you have a plan to grow spiritually?

I am acutely aware that many plans do not come to fruition, and I certainly do not believe that just because you write things down they magically come true. But as a coach I have observed that those who take the planning process seriously get much further than those who don’t. Do not buy the lie that you are too busy or too distracted to make a plan.

The gift of our freedom is amazing. Let us not squander it by relegating ourselves to an unplanned life. This is the time of the year to make those plans.

For all of my clients out there: I look forward to seeing yours and to helping you grow where you want to go in the coming year.

With much peace,

Coach Steve

How Your Agent Markets Themselves Indicates How They Will Market Your Home

With the glut of available homes on the market, how your home is marketed is the biggest factor in determining how quickly it will sell (assuming the price is reasonably presented). A real estate agent’s marketing plan should be the most crucial determinant in deciding who to list your home with. But, how can you really know about the agent’s marketing strategies?

One way is to see what they are doing with their current clients. Do those homes “stand out”? Contact those sellers. Are they getting a lot of showings and offers?

Another way is looking at how the agent markets themselves and their services:

Does the photo they use for themselves represent how they look?
Does their print advertising look like everyone else’s?
What technology are they using to show your home? Are they using video?
Is their website interesting and full of current information or just cookie cutter?
Do they have a professional presence on social networks?
Does their marketing show them as an expert or does it merely pat them on the back?
Quality photos on the web and top notch video may be the factor that drives people to see your house (and they are very important). However, how an agent drives traffic to see those photos and videos is even more important.

We all know the saying – “It’s not what you know…it’s who you know.” However, in marketing, it’s more crucial to know “who knows you”. Agents who are unknown are not good marketers. Today, you need an excellent marketer to represent you.

What’s Holding You Back?

What is really impacting your pursuit of the results you want to achieve? If there is something holding you back in your life and chosen career, what can you do about it?

Certainly the economy — domestic and global — has impacted most of us, and will continue to have a negative impact for at least a few more years. But it is too easy to blame outside influences and avoid taking responsibility for what we need to do in order to reach our goals.

There are external factors — including biases, prejudices, regulatory barriers, and so on — that are out of our immediate control. Yet there are things we can do that will improve our situation if we persistently stay the course.

Take stock of the following as you reflect on what you want to achieve in 2012.

Know where you want to go.

What is that you want to achieve in every important aspect of life? And what is your plan to do it? Too often we can get stuck in a routine without thinking about how our daily actions fit into a greater plan of reaching our goals. Each of us can benefit from a specific game plan.

The more specific your goals are, the more specific your actions will be. Big goals (and little ones, too) are accomplished one step at a time. But we need to start moving in the right direction with a continuous focus on expected results.

Know what you need to improve.

All of us can get better. Knowing what to work on is a good start!

Be honest in your assessment of where you need to improve. Don’t miss the opportunity to ask loved ones, co-workers, and yes, even the boss what you can do to improve. There is a very worthwhile exercise called Keep-Start-Stop that can be a huge benefit.

Take this feedback seriously, implement the suggested changes, and it can make a big difference.

Persist through the challenges.

There will be setbacks. Expect them. When obstacles get in the way, attack them head-on. Overcoming them can be stimulating as well as rewarding.

Don’t keep your goals to yourself.

There is something extremely beneficial about sharing your goals. At the very least, it will make you more committed and accountable to staying the course to reach them.

Work your plan.

With your goals and required actions in front of you each day, you can move forward with the confidence of knowing that the accomplishment of each action moves you closer to your goals.

Review your progress regularly. Make mid-course corrections as necessary.

You will get there by keeping your game plan in focus.

The graphic depicts pricing of all homes from their ‘peak through current declines’ as per Case Shiller. This index looks at prices in 20 major metropolitan areas.

Each market peaked at different times. Therefore, the InfoGraphic doesn’t cover one segment of time. Here is a site where you can see when each market actually peaked:

LEADERS AND THE GAME OF LIFE

How important is winning to you? I know I like to win. What’s even more important is how I play the game. The process is key to me.

For many leaders today, life is moving really fast. Contemplating the process of life is not on the top of many leaders “to do” lists. Yet, process is vital in order to do life well and to finish well. To me finishing well implies much more than just a successful career or ministry. How important is life’s process to you?

Far too many leaders today are caught up in the rigors and the demands of their roles and careers, so much so, that contemplating process is not even on their radar screens. Countless leaders won’t even stop to look at their life process until they get into their 50s and 60s.

Extraordinary leadership and finishing well, means going above and beyond the scope of just succeeding in one area of life. Being a remarkable leader means exercising moral and spiritual integrity in all areas of life: personal, family, professional, community, and faith.

Now, I am not talking about being perfect, what I am talking about is being honest. Navigating life with dignity, poise, integrity, and authenticity.

The challenge for many leaders today is that they will not consider the implications of this question until much later in life. I believe this is one of the most important questions leaders should ponder and the earlier the better.

In his research with church leaders over the course of history, Robert J. Clinton came to a startling conclusion: only 1 in 3 leaders will finish well. I wrote about some of his findings in a recent post: ”Leaders Finishing Well”.

When one starts with the goal of finishing life well, it sets them on a great life course. So what’s involved? Leaders can do four things now to help ensure they are on the path to finishing well:

Contemplation: Take time to reflect. Think about your life and what it means to you to finish life well. In his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey says that beginning with the end in mind is key. Fast forward and envision what kind of legacy you wish to leave behind. You won’t be able to take anything with you when you are gone. However, you can leave “deposits of you” and a contribution that may impact generations to come. Write down what’s important to you.

Commitment: Know your core values and stay committed to them. Ask yourself: what are the things in your life that are extremely important to you? Core values are the things that are nearest and dearest to our hearts. They reflect what matters most.

Cost: In any significant endeavor, you need to count the cost. Invite someone that you trust into your journey with you. Be accountable in all areas of your life. Ask yourself if there are any obstacles in your life such as, wounds, shame, hidden secrets, or character issues that you need to deal with or overcome. Be willing to do what it takes to live your best life.

Courage: Stay the course. Make a decision that you will not compromise. Have the courage to live out your convictions in every area of your life. One of the greatest obstacles people have in life is fear. Overcoming fear was part of my journey. Be courageous and don’t be afraid to live out what you believe God is calling you to.

Most every major decision I make in life is influenced by what I believe God is calling me to and the legacy I wish to leave behind. When I stop to think about the things that matter most in life, they are the people I love and what God is calling me to do. Sometimes I need a little reminder, to slow down and remember what this game of life is really all about.

How about you, is it time to slow down a bit and look at your life process? Are you more focused on winning or the process?

Question: What are some of the things you can do today to make sure you are on a course to finishing well?
